Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy

Loren A. Smith, Jr. is Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy at the U.S. Department of Transportation.

From Nov 2016-Jan 2017, he served on the transition team for the President-elect, as team leader for the Department of Labor and labor policy. From 2009 through 2016, he was an analyst for Capital Alpha Partners, a research firm in Washington that studies public policy for investors. At Capital Alpha, Loren specialized in transportation policy, particularly relating to autos and infrastructure.

Prior to his work at Capital Alpha, Loren worked at the Department of Labor under Secretary Elaine Chao. His first job in government was as a legislative aide to Rep. Vito Fossella of New York. Before that, he worked for several public-policy-focused non-profit organizations.

He is a graduate of Boston College and lives in Virginia with his wife and their eight fantastic children.
